Laser Hair Reduction

Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem for both men and women.

Laser hair reduction is an effective treatment for the removal of unwanted hair. Laser hair reduction can treat larger areas of unwanted hair growth with minimal discomfort and fewer complications than other laser hair reduction methods. The laser sends specific concentrated beams of light through the skin, which are absorbed by the dark pigment present in the hair follicle shafts.

Hair grows in cycles, which makes repeated treatments necessary to destroy the hair follicles.

Am I a candidate for laser hair reduction?

Fair skin and dark hair produces the best results for IPL laser hair reduction. Blonde, or very light hair, and gray hair do not respond to IPL laser hair reduction. Also, dark skin with dark hair is not an ideal candidate for laser hair reduction.

How many treatments are required?

Ideally, 4-6 treatments are needed to see the full result of laser hair reduction. However, patients will notice a great improvement after about 2-3 treatments. It is typically not until the fourth treatment that the hair no longer grows back.

Does the procedure hurt?

Most patients feel a slight stinging sensation in the areas being treated. This feeling is temporary and usually only lasts during the time the skin is being treated. The laser has a cooling device that is used in conjunction with the laser light, which helps to alleviate the heat from the procedure, making it less painful.

What is the downtime for the procedure?

There is minimal to no downtime after an laser hair reduction procedure. Most patients experience a slight redness to the area being treated. For many people, the redness is minimized within an hour after having the procedure done. For more sensitive patients, the redness may persist for a few hours.

Can I spend time in the sun after the treatment?

It is important to avoid sun exposure during the entire laser hair reduction process. Patients should use an SPF 30 or higher daily on the treated area, if it is exposed to the sun. The use of tanning beds should not be used during the laser hair reduction process. If the treated area has significant sun exposure during the process, there is a great risk of developing scarring.

How long does each procedure take?

The time a procedure takes varies, depending on what area of the body is being treated. For instance, an armpit procedure takes about 20 minutes, bikini may take 30-45 minutes, and full legs may take 2 hours.
